WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware, the company ended VMware perpetual license sales in favor of subscriptions. Today, the Coalition for Fair Software (CFSL) Executive Director Ryan Triplette released the following statement in response to Broadcom’s announcement of changes to its VMware software licensing model in light of customers’ concerns.
“Over the past several weeks, customers have expressed concerns about Broadcom’s licensing changes to VMware software. While the announcement last week presumably seeks to address some of the concerns in the short term, fundamentally, there remains a considerable lack of clarity as to the licensing policies that will apply to essential software on which customers are reliant.
“Customers are having to navigate a range of issues stemming from Broadcom’s licensing changes that are in direct violation of the Principles of Fair Software Licensing. Customers should have the ability to use must-have software in a reliable and predictable manner without having to manage the budgetary impact of new provider demands for multi-year upfront payments. Further, customers should have the ability to use previously purchased software without having to re-license it to run it in the environment they originally intended.
“Unfortunately, Broadcom’s changes are part of a growing trend of software providers using heavy-handed, restrictive licensing practices to change the requirements for existing customers, limiting their choice. The fact that software vendors continue to implement new and unfair licensing practices show why, now more than ever, it is imperative for the industry to adopt the Principles of Fair Software Licensing to ensure that customers can access the licensed software they need in a reliable and predictable manner.”
