WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Coalition for Fair Software Licensing (CFSL) Executive Director Ryan Triplette released the following statement in response to the Asociación Española de Startups (Spanish Startups Association, AES)’s complaint to the Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) regarding Microsoft’s anticompetitive cloud practices.
“Today’s action by the Asociación Española de Startups (AES), the Spanish startups association, underscores the breadth of Microsoft’s anticompetitive practices on businesses of all sizes, especially startups that are not only dependent on its products but also are competitors of Microsoft’s who are innovating the next generation of cloud- and AI-based services.
“Restrictive software licensing practices, like tying products to must-have software and ‘bring your own license’ restrictions, harm both customers and innovation by limiting customers’ ability to bring their existing licenses to the cloud of their choice and raising the cost of competition. For emerging providers, the impact on their bottom lines can be devastating – both increasing operational costs and limiting their ability to successfully compete in the market.
“We applaud the AES for taking action in defense of innovators in Spain and joining a growing number of voices around the world speaking out against Microsoft’s continued reliance on unfair licensing practices. The Coalition encourages the Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission to investigate these practices and urges regulators around the world, including in the United States, to follow suit and hold Microsoft accountable to the Principles of Fair Software Licensing.”
