WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Coalition for Fair Software (CFSL) Executive Director Ryan Triplette released the following statement in response to the European Commission issuing their Statement of Objections against Microsoft abusing its market dominance. The impetus of this investigation originated with Slack Technologies’ complaint alleging that Microsoft illegally ties its Teams product to its market-dominant Office productivity suite.
“Microsoft has continued to leverage its dominance in productivity software to grow its foothold in communications and collaboration as well as productivity and the cloud. Its anticompetitive practices have forced the adoption of Teams and effectively tipped the market in Microsoft’s favor.
“Facing increasing global scrutiny for its business practices, Microsoft announced in April it would sell Teams separately from its Office product globally. As we pointed out then, this announcement failed to address the interoperability and licensing restrictions at the core of customer and competitor complaints against Microsoft.
“We applaud the European Commission for taking this step to protect competition and customer choice. We urge all regulators to follow suit and ensure Microsoft’s actions match its promises.”
In 2020, Slack filed a complaint with the European Commission detailing Microsoft abusing its market dominance to extinguish competition. In July 2023, the European antitrust authorities opened a formal investigation into Microsoft’s tying practices of Teams with Office 365 and Microsoft 365.
In April 2024, Microsoft announced its decision to separate Teams from Office 365 sales in an attempt to appease EU regulators and avoid further regulatory scrutiny. The Statement of Objections is a formal step in the Commission’s investigation into Microsoft’s suspected violation of EU rules and competition law.
