WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Coalition for Fair Software Licensing (CFSL) released the below statement following news that Brazil’s antitrust regulator, the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), has opened an investigation into Microsoft related to its software and cloud computing services.
“Microsoft continues to leverage its global dominance in legacy software to limit customer choice and undermine fair competition with restrictive licensing and tying practices. We urge CADE to fully use its existing powers to hold Microsoft accountable and remedy these harms, and we are encouraged that regulators around the world, including the U.S., UK, and Europe, are gearing up to take swift action to protect customers.” – Ryan Triplette, Executive Director of the Coalition for Fair Software Licensing
Brazil’s investigation follows a growing pattern of scrutiny from regulators in the U.S., UK, and Europe regarding Microsoft’s software licensing and business practices. Just as Microsoft’s anticompetitive and unfair software license practices have increased the cost of software and cloud services for American businesses and taxpayers, the company uses the same practices globally and causes the same harms. The CFSL will continue to urge regulators, including the Federal Trade Commission, to intervene.
